Museum of Music in NYC
WPA wasn’t just about giving money to people who WPA wasn’t just about giving money to people who needed it. It was about the dignity that comes with having a job. And crucially, it recognized that there is dignity in doing the work one is trained to do. The WPA saw art as a public good just as it saw a bridge or a park as a public good. And so, “Federal Project Number One” was established within the WPA to commission new works of music, theater, dance, writing, and visual art, put on free and subsidized public performances, offer free art instruction to the public.

The WPA also created opportunities for African-America artists and immigrant artists. It distributed meaningful work to artists of all disciplines in cities and towns throughout the United States. The Federal Arts Project was America at its best. Artists as diverse as William Faulkner, Zora Neale Hurston, Jackson Pollock, John Houseman, Paul Robeson, Doris Humphrey, Katherine Dunham, Arthur Miller, Orson Welles, Countee Cullen, Aaron Douglas, & Aaron Copland created work under the Federal Project Number One.

We need to bring back a NYC, NY State, and USA as forward thinking as this as we move to reopen our broken industry.

While we fully support protecting public health, there is no plan to safely reopen live music. NY State and City government has prevented musicians from earning a living; even in situations where equivalent businesses (e.g. restaurants) were permitted carefully regulated re-openings. We need all music workers, fans & allies to join us on Monday, October 26 to tell the politicians: We are not expendable!
