OUR MISSION
Education, Performance, Preservation

MOMENT NYC’s education programs center on the importance of community, culture, and collaboration found through music. We provide presentations, performances, instruction, and events to students from grade school to college level with a mix of tech, hands-on, and New York City music history.

Music created in New York City has reached and influenced nearly every corner of the globe. Our mission is to celebrate this diverse heritage, to support musical communities, and to educate and inspire future generations.

MOMENT NYC has worked with NYC students from PS63, PS34, PS188, PS15, PS20, PS134, PS110, Earth School, Girls Prep, and UNMS in collaboration with Henry Street Settlement, and JHS123, PS/MS206, and CIS303x with Americorp. The majority of our students are people of color and come from low-to-moderate-income households. The programs provide musical instruction, introductory musical literacy, multicultural music appreciation, local history, and elements of related science and technology.

Below is the brochure for our grade school, after-school and summer programs. Knowing what these young students get from these programs makes us very proud. Please consider making a donation to help us to continue this work.

Curating Sound with the University of Virginia

In 2020 we collaborated with Professor Noel Lobley at the University of Virginia on the course Curating Sound. The course was a partnership between The Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection, MOMENT NYC, The Black Power Station, Makhanda (South Africa), and UVa. The discovery-driven design course explored the intersections of curatorial practice, sound studies, ethnography, composition, sound art, and community arts practice, through a series of engagements linking archival collections, local and international artists and art and community spaces, and the method and philosophies of embodied and experiential deep listening. Drawing from both the histories and potential affordances of sound curation we engaged with practical examples ranging from sub-Saharan Africa to Australia, and from Europe to New York, asking what it means to curate local sound within globalized arts circuits. The students explored multiple and diverse case studies where artists, curators, communities, industries and institutions have both collaborated and clashed, as we asked whether it is desirable or even possible to curate the elusive, invasive and ephemeral object, medium and experience of sound. This was our second collaboration with the University of Virginia and we have plans to continue our undergraduate course development work in 2021.
